Applications for Framingham Pre-K expansion program are due

FRAMINGHAM — Local families have until Monday to apply for a pre-k expansion program designed for 4-year-old children who are not currently enrolled in an early childhood program.

More than 26% of the district’s students enter kindergarten with no preschool experience. Children who reside in the Southside are more likely to fall in that category.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Tremblay said the district would like to offer more early childhood options for students but is “limited by the space we have.”

“We are trying to target families to be enrolled who would otherwise never be able to enroll in those programs because of affordability, transportation, whatever,” he said. “We have to be intentional to get kids in those programs.”

The school district has joined forces with the MetroWest YMCA and Framingham State University – Centers for Early Childhood Education on Partnerships for Early Learners (PEL) to offer more prekindergarten spots.

Applications are being accepted for the upcoming school year, according to a press release. The program will run from September to June 2023.

Families can submit the PreK intake form until Monday, with form and eligibility review taking place from May 17 to June 2. They must meet certain eligibility criteria in order to be accepted into the program.
