Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (10/5/22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point sophomore second baseman Derek Berg and Holy Cross sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Remley received Patriot League Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, when the League office announced honors on Tuesday. Crusaders freshman second baseman Connor Peek was named rookie of the week.

Berg claimed Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week honors for the first time after hitting .400 (10-for-25) and driving in nine runs to help the Black Knights go 5-1 last week, including sweeping two games against Lafayette on Saturday .

Remley earned his first Patriot League Pitcher of the Week accolade after throwing 7.0 shutout innings in a win to help the Crusaders clinch the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Baseball Championship.

Peek received Patriot League Baseball Rookie of the Week for batting .50 (7-for-14) with six RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles to help Holy Cross win three of four games during the weekend to clinch a postseason berth.

Army West Point sophomore LHP Sean Dennehy, Lehigh senior LHP Luke Retting, senior OF/RHP Casey Rother and freshman outfielder Jake Whitlinger collected honorable mentions for their performances last week.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Derek Berg, Army West Point, Sun., 2B, Conroe, Texas/Conroe

*Berg hit .400 (10-for-25) with nine RBIs, eight runs, two doubles, one triple and a pair of stolen bases to help the Black Knights go 5-1 last week, including sweeping Lafayette on Sunday and splitting Saturday’s double header with Lehigh.
*The Conroe, Texas native combined to go 5-for-9 with three RBIs, three runs, two doubles and one triple during Sunday’s sweep of the Leopards.
*He had 15 putouts and 13 assists at second base during the week, including seven assists against Lafayette in two games on Sunday.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Matt Remley, Holy Cross, So., RHP, North Andover, Mass./St. John’s Prep

*Remley posted the best outing of his collegiate career by throwing 7.0 scoreless innings while scattering six hits in the Crusaders’ 8-1 win over Lehigh on Sunday.
*The North Andover, Mass. native struck out five and walked one to help Holy Cross clinch the no. 4 seed in the Patriot League Championship.
*His win in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Mountain Hawks was his second of the season.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Connor Peek, Holy Cross, Fri., 2B, Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury Regional

*Peek batted .500 (7-for-14) with six RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles to help the Crusaders win three of its four games over the weekend to clinch the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Championship.
*The freshman second baseman slugged .643 and reached base at a .500 clip while posting three multi-hit games and driving in at least one run in all four games.
*He went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored in Holy Cross’s 8-1 victory in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader with Lehigh to clinch a postseason berth.

Honorable Mentions
Sean Dennehy, Army West Point, So., LHP, Wallingford, Conn./Loomis Chaffee
*Dennehy earned a pair of saves with two scoreless appearances spanning 2.1 hitless innings. The sophomore southpaw retired one batter to close the Black Knights, 8-6 win over Lafayette in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Luke Rettig, Lehigh, Sr., LHP, Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area
*Rettig earned his eighth victory of the season by allowing two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings against Holy Cross. The senior left-hander struck out seven and walked two.

Casey Rother, Lehigh, Sr., OF/RHP, Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area

*Rother hit .400 (8-for-20) with one home run, four RBIs and one run scored to help the Mountain Hawks to a 3-2 record last week. He went 2-for-3 with a one home run and three RBIs in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with Army West Point.

Jake Whitlinger, Lehigh, Fr., OF, Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College

*Whitlinger batted .400 (8-for-20) with three RBIs, two runs and two doubles to help the Mountain Hawks go 3-2 last week. The Harleysville, Pa. native went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run in Lehigh’s 12-5 victory over Army West Point to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Championship on Saturday.
