Job Description
Summary: The Priest-in-Charge serves as the primary pastor, priest and teacher of St. Mary’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, sharing in the ministries of the St. Mary’s congregation and of the whole Church, in community with the Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey. The Priest-in-Charge is responsible for the overall ministry of the church in collaboration with lay leadership, in accordance with the Holy Scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of New Jersey.

Duties Include:


  • Plans for the orderly progression of a meaningful worship
  • Leads worship and preaches or, when appropriate, arranges for others to preach
  • Plans and implements worship and associated events, and activities for the major seasons of the liturgical year


  • Develops a comprehensive plan to proclaim the Good News and provides leadership in living out the Great Commission
  • In collaboration with the Communications Committee develops and implements an effective public relations program for the church.
  • Provides leadership in community relations and outreach opportunities, representing the Church at community organizations and events.

Pastoral Ministry

  • Calls on those in hospitals, nursing homes, homebound and members as needed.
  • Provides pastoral counseling as needed
  • Officiates at baptisms, weddings, funerals and sacraments in accordance with Church Canons
  • Assists in making the congregation an effective, caring member of the community

Parish Life/Administration

  • Develops means to integrate new members and current members more fully in to church with the help of the Vestry and Fellowship committee
  • Maintains open communication with Vestry and parish
  • Seeks ways to increase open communication among parishioners
  • In agreement with Wardens, maintains consistent weekly in-person office hours to accommodate parishioners’ needs
  • Shares with the Wardens and Vestry the responsibility for the administrative and fiscal matters of the church
  • Provides leadership and supervision of Parish staff
  • Provides leadership in the development and implementation of long-range plans in coordination with the Wardens and Vestry
  • Works with the Vestry to establish annual goals for him/herself and the Vestry.
  • Meets on a regular basis with defined church groups or committees, or leaders of such groups, including but not limited to: Vestry, Altar Guild, St Mary’s Society, Outreach, Worship, Choir, Finance, Education, Buildings and Grounds, etc.
  • Monitors all church communications
  • Working with Buildings and Grounds, and Finance Committees, assures all facilities and grounds are maintained in good working order and repairs are made in a timely manner within budget, to assure safety and positive appearance.
  • Works with the Stewardship Committee to design and implement an annual giving campaign
  • Works with finance and fundraising committees to plan and implement fundraising events
  • Actively participates in fundraising, fellowship, and church events, and outreach activities


  • Develops, designs, implements and evaluates comprehensive adult and youth education programs in collaboration with the Education Committee and coordinators
  • Provides leadership in adult retreats and adult and youth education activities
  • Serves on Diocesan committees and commissions
  • Participates in Diocesan educational opportunities
