Sandy Wands Obituary – The State Journal Register

Sandy Wands 1941 – 2022

Sherman, IL—Sandy Wands, 80, of Springfield, died on Monday, March 14, 2022, at a Villa Healthcare East in Sherman.

Sandy was born July 14, 1941, in Springfield, the daughter of Charles E. Wands and Julia Anne Miloncus Wands.

Her early education included Blessed Sacrament School and Springfield High School graduating in 1959. After a year at Bradley University, Sandy paused her formal education to work for Miller Freeman Publishing in San Francisco before returning to Bradley where she graduated with the class of 1966. She started her teaching at Feitshans High School in 1965. When Southeast was built to replace Feitshans, Sandy’s energy and enthusiasm soared. She was inspired to make the school the best in any way that she could. Sandy taught English, sponsored the Student Council, and coached the Cheerleader and Pom Pom squads. She always made sure there were fun pep rallies with faculty skits before big games. When the school year ended, her schedule ramped up with fundraising and travel to get her squads to the best summer camps that she could find. The finished product always brought home trophies and ribbons for their excellence. In an emergency, Sandy also helped coach the girls track team to the state finals. Her energy and fervor for Southeast sports garnered her an induction into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame as a Friend of Sport in 1996.

Sandy received numerous honors during her career, among them having the yearbook dedicated to her and being selected Educator of the Year by Phi Delta Kappa, an educational fraternity. She started a service learning program sponsored by AmeriCorps that sent students out into the community to do good works. Sandy loved teaching above all and was particularly good with students who struggled. She was probably the “favorite” teacher of many students during her 30-year career. At the home she shared with her mother, guests were always welcomed, and their Christmas parties were legendary.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Wands.

She is survived by her brother, James (Becky) Wands of Omaha, NE; sister, Rachel (Ernie) Neumann of Auburn, IL; and nephews, Stephen Wands of Broomfield, CO, Stewart Wands of Littleton, CO, and Eric Neumann of Auburn, IL

Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to inurnment at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
